UPDATE: San Jose State’s football program is witnessing an extraordinary transformation under the leadership of Beca Perez, the 27-year-old director of player personnel. With her innovative strategies, Perez is reshaping the Spartans’ roster just in time for the 2025 season, following a record-breaking year for the program.
In a remarkable turn of events, Perez has emerged as a trailblazer in college football, being one of only three women in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) to hold a similar position. Her significant role comes after the Spartans concluded last season with the most regular-season wins in California’s FBS schools.
With the 2025 season fast approaching, Perez is pulling double duty to recruit talent, especially after 28 players entered the transfer portal following the departure of former head coach Brent Brennan. The urgency is palpable as the Spartans prepare to kick off their campaign with only 52 returning players, one of the lowest figures in college football.
“I felt like I was swimming, working kind of nonstop,” Perez reflected on her tumultuous first season. “Last year was chaos.” Yet, through her relentless commitment, she helped the Spartans earn a spot in the Hawaii Bowl, marking their third consecutive bowl appearance.
San Jose State’s head coach, Ken Niumatalolo, praised Perez’s tenacity, stating, “She’s the one person I don’t mind on her phone at practice because she’s constantly on it, social media, doing things that keep us 19 steps ahead.” Her use of social media, particularly X (formerly known as Twitter), is pivotal in scouting and connecting with potential recruits nationwide.
Known for her distinctive chrome Quay sunglasses, Perez is a familiar face on the sidelines, having built her career from the ground up. Her journey began in Sunnyvale, where childhood football games with her cousins ignited her passion for the sport. She recalls her high school days at St. Francis, where she managed the football team, never imagining it would lead her to the role she holds today.
“Never did I think it would get to the point that I’m in this position now,” she said. “I want to break barriers and ensure that I leave a path for others who want to follow.”
Transitioning from her role at Army as the director of recruiting, Perez’s impact at San Jose State has been profound. Despite the challenges of rebuilding a Division I program, she has successfully rallied the team and staff. “We’re doing a lot more with very little,” Perez stated, emphasizing the special group of players under her guidance.
As the Spartans gear up for the season, the stakes are high. With a strong focus on recruiting and team cohesion, Perez is determined to elevate San Jose State to new heights. The 2025 season is set to showcase her vision and leadership as the Spartans aim to surpass expectations in the Mountain West Conference.
As kickoff approaches, all eyes will be on Beca Perez and the San Jose State Spartans. With her at the helm, the future looks bright for this emerging powerhouse in college football.
