The Miami Dolphins are gearing up for their opening game against the Indianapolis Colts, scheduled for September 10, 2025. Tight end Darren Waller, who recently came out of retirement, is focused on shaking off the rust as he adjusts to the physical and mental demands of the game. Waller, 32, returned to the NFL after a brief retirement in 2024, following his trade from the New York Giants to the Dolphins in July.
Waller expressed his commitment to getting back into peak form during a recent training camp session. According to Joe Schad of the Palm Beach Post, Waller acknowledged the challenges of reacclimating to football. “Got to knock some rust off,” he stated. “But I’m just grateful to be where I’m at today.” His plan involves extensive practice with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa to establish a strong rapport before the season begins.
In preparation for the upcoming season, Waller emphasized the importance of getting “reps” and familiarizing himself with Tagovailoa’s throwing style. He noted, “Just getting time under tension, knowing how he’s getting the ball off when he hits his drop… those things start to become second nature.” Waller’s determination to refine his skills is evident as he works to regain his rhythm on the field.
Waller has a notable track record, having recorded two seasons with over 1,000 receiving yards in 2019 and 2020 with the Oakland and Las Vegas Raiders. He earned a Pro Bowl nomination in 2020. In the 2023 season with the Giants, Waller made 53 receptions for 552 yards and a touchdown. Although he may not reach the 1,000-yard mark this season, his presence on the field will still pose a significant threat, especially alongside top receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle.
As the Dolphins prepare to face the Colts, questions have arisen regarding the team’s toughness, particularly during joint practices against the Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions. With Waller’s return and his physical playing style, he is expected to bring an edge to the Dolphins’ offense once he overcomes the initial challenges of returning to play.
As the team looks ahead to Week 1, Waller’s experience and skill set could play a pivotal role in the Dolphins’ offensive strategy, making him a player to watch this season. With just a week left before their opener, the pressure is on for Waller and his teammates to deliver a strong performance as they embark on their 2025 campaign.
