candlewood-lake-closes-all-public-islands-ahead-of-labor-day

UPDATE: Candlewood Lake is set to close all of its public islands starting Friday, just ahead of the busy Labor Day weekend, in a move driven by urgent public health and safety concerns. Officials from the Candlewood Lake Authority confirmed this decision via a Facebook post, stating that the closures are necessary due to “significant misuse and overcrowding” that has compromised the islands.

The closure affects all 12 public islands on Candlewood Lake, which spans 8.4 square miles and is the largest lake in Connecticut. This decision was made in collaboration with several towns, including Brookfield, Danbury, New Fairfield, New Milford, and Sherman, alongside the lake’s owner, FirstLight.

In a statement, New Milford Mayor Pete Bass highlighted the extreme overcrowding issues that have led to large amounts of garbage and human waste on the islands, stating, “This can cause a significant impact to the health of the islands and the lake.” The closures aim to prevent further degradation of the natural areas and protect the environment.

Law enforcement will strictly enforce these closures through the Candlewood Lake Authority Marine Patrol, the Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection’s Environmental Conservation Police, and local police. Those who violate the island closures will face removal and potential fines for trespassing, as emphasized by the Candlewood Lake Authority.

With the Labor Day weekend approaching, this announcement brings immediate implications for recreational activities in the area. Visitors planning to spend time at the lake should be aware of these restrictions, as the islands are popular spots for relaxation and gatherings.

As the situation develops, residents and visitors are encouraged to stay informed through official channels for updates on the closures and any potential reopening plans. The health of Candlewood Lake’s ecosystems and the safety of its visitors remain the top priorities for local authorities.
