
Delaware State Police are investigating a tragic two-vehicle collision in Newark that resulted in one fatality and left another person seriously injured. The incident occurred on August 22, 2025, at approximately 15:23 at the intersection of Bear Christiana Road and Freedom Road.
According to police reports, a maroon Chevrolet Trax was traveling northbound on Bear Christiana Road, preparing to turn left onto Freedom Road, when it was struck by a southbound black BMW 335. Investigators believe that the BMW was racing an unidentified vehicle at a high speed just before the crash. The impact involved the right front side of the Chevrolet, leading to significant injuries.
The driver of the Chevrolet, a 75-year-old man from Newark, was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. His identity has not been disclosed as authorities are awaiting notification of his family. The 49-year-old driver of the BMW, also a Newark resident, was taken to a local medical facility and is currently being treated for serious injuries.

Following the incident, Bear Christiana Road was closed for approximately three and a half hours to allow police to conduct their investigation and clear the scene. The Delaware State Police Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit is leading the inquiry and is actively seeking witnesses.
