UPDATE: The Portland Thorns’ remarkable home unbeaten streak has come to an abrupt end as they fell 2-0 to the Kansas City Current at Providence Park on September 16, 2023. In a shocking start, the Current capitalized on an early lapse, scoring just 54 seconds into the match, and maintained their dominance throughout the game.

This loss marks the Thorns’ first home defeat since October 5, 2024, snapping a club-record streak of 10 consecutive matches without a loss at home. With this defeat, the Thorns now sit in fifth place in the NWSL standings, just two points behind Orlando with nine games remaining in the season.

The league-leading Current, with their impressive record of 14-2-1 (43 points), extended their winning streak to nine out of ten matches and recorded their fifth consecutive shutout. Kansas City has not lost a game since May 2, showcasing their dominance in the league with a remarkable 12-point lead over second-place Washington.

The Thorns, backed by a crowd of 16,695 fans, struggled to respond after the early goal. Ellie Wheeler caught the Thorns off guard, heading a cross from Izzy Rodriguez into the net. The Current have now outscored opponents 21-1 in first halves this season, underlining their aggressive start to games.

Despite their struggles, the Thorns had opportunities to equalize. Deyna Castellanos created several chances, including a close-range effort that was saved by Current goalkeeper Lorena Leite. However, Kansas City’s defense remained resolute, and three minutes after the Thorns’ near-misses, Temwa Chawinga sealed the game with a goal in the 71st minute, poking the ball through the legs of Thorns keeper Mackenzie Arnold for her 11th goal of the season.

In a bid to bolster their roster, the Thorns announced earlier in the day that they had acquired French international forward Julie Dufour from Angel City FC. Dufour, who made her debut as a substitute in the 82nd minute, brings a wealth of experience from her time in France, having played for Lille, Bordeaux, and Paris FC.

Looking ahead, the Thorns will aim to rebound quickly as they face the last-place Utah Royals at home on September 22. The Royals have struggled this season, managing only one win in their last 17 games.

As the Thorns work to regain their footing in the NWSL playoff race, the immediate challenge looms large. Will they bounce back and reclaim their home advantage? Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
