BREAKING NEWS: The Oregon Ducks have confirmed that Gary Bryant Jr. will step in as the team’s new punt returner for the 2025 season, following the departure of Tez Johnson. Johnson, known for his explosive speed, averaged an impressive 11.92 yards per punt return last season, a statistic that would have placed him 15th nationally if he had qualified.

This change comes just ahead of Oregon’s opening game against Montana State, scheduled for September 2, 2025. Special teams coordinator Joe Lorig expressed the significant challenge of replacing Johnson, stating, “(Johnson) was really a game-changing player… It’s difficult to replace that.”

Bryant, who saw limited action last year due to injury, is ready to seize the opportunity. He recorded five returns for 42 yards last season, and previously had 11 returns for 50 yards during the 2021 season at USC. “I want it bad,” Bryant stated. “Going out there, putting my head down and earning the position is what I’m used to doing.”

As the Ducks prepare for the season, the focus on special teams is crucial, emphasizing possession and minimizing penalties. Coach Dan Lanning praised Bryant’s reliability, noting, “He’s a great decision-maker at returner… Our No. 1 goal is possession of the ball.”

With several players moving on this offseason, the competition for punt returner has been intense. Lorig has rotated multiple receivers in practice, including Dakorien Moore and Malik Benson, to ensure depth in the position. Redshirt-freshmen Dillon Gresham and Jeremiah McClellan have also been practicing as potential returners.

As the Ducks gear up for an exciting season, all eyes will be on Bryant as he takes on the pivotal role of punt returner, aiming to fill the shoes left by Johnson’s departure. Stay tuned for more updates as the season kicks off!
