The Miami Dolphins held their eighteenth practice at the Baptist Health Training Complex on Wednesday, showcasing the return of key player Darren Waller, who appeared in uniform for the first time since his acquisition from the New York Giants. Waller’s presence marks a significant development for the team, although he participated minimally, focusing primarily on stretching.

Several notable players remained absent from practice, including Tyreek Hill and De’Von Achane, along with rookie first-round draft pick Kenneth Grant. Other players missing from the session were offensive linemen Austin Jackson, Andrew Meyer, and Addison West, as well as defensive backs Dante Trader Jr., Kendall Sheffield, Ethan Bonner, and safety Ashtyn Davis. It is worth mentioning that Davis was spotted without a walking boot for the first time, while Jackson continued to train on a stationary bike with a boot on his left leg.

In contrast, fullback Alec Ingold and linebacker Mohamed Kamara both donned regular jerseys after previously wearing red for injury designation. Additionally, veteran edge rusher Matthew Judon participated in his first practice with the Dolphins following the official announcement of his signing.

Practice Highlights and Player Performances

The practice featured a series of competitive drills, with significant defensive plays making headlines. On the first play of the 11-on-11 drills, defensive back Jack Jones nearly intercepted a deep pass from quarterback Tua Tagovailoa intended for Jaylen Waddle. Judon demonstrated his presence in coverage, contributing to a play where Tagovailoa checked down to running back Ollie Gordon due to a lack of open receivers.

Despite some difficulties, including a dropped handoff from quarterback Zach Wilson to Gordon, the players showcased their skills. Defensive back Elijah Campbell intercepted a pass from Wilson, although it was noted that defensive end Derrick McLendon likely would have sacked him during the play. The defense, led by Judon, applied consistent pressure, resulting in a sack during a two-minute drill.

Quarterback Quinn Ewers had a standout moment, completing a 40-yard pass to A.J. Henning on his first snap. However, he later encountered a mishap, dropping a snap from under center. Notably, Wilson connected with wide receiver Dee Eskridge for a deep completion, showcasing the offensive potential.

Defensive performances continued to shine, with players like Jaelan Phillips and Jordan Phillips making impactful plays. Judon consistently pressured Wilson throughout the drills, demonstrating his importance to the team’s defensive strategy.

The session concluded with several defensive highlights, including a pass breakup by Jason Marshall Jr. and a crucial interception in the end zone, where it appeared that Cam Smith tipped a Tagovailoa pass into the hands of Jones.

As the Dolphins prepare for their joint practice with the Jacksonville Jaguars and their upcoming preseason finale, the focus remains on building synergy among players and enhancing both offensive and defensive strategies. The return of Waller and the performance of key players will be pivotal as the team moves closer to the regular season.
