UPDATE: In a stunning turn of events, the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 3-2 in the 10th inning on Sunday, snapping the Brewers’ franchise-record 14-game winning streak. This captivating victory unfolded at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, marking a significant moment in Major League Baseball history.

The Reds’ triumph began with a clutch performance from Austin Hays, whose single with the bases loaded sealed the game. This result not only halted Milwaukee’s longest winning streak of the season but also the longest in the majors since the St. Louis Cardinals achieved 17 straight wins in September 2021.

Milwaukee had fought hard to extend their streak, narrowly winning the previous two games in Cincinnati. They had showcased remarkable resilience, including an extraordinary comeback from a seven-run deficit on Friday and an impressive win in 14 innings on Saturday. However, this time the Reds proved too strong.

The game remained scoreless through six tense innings, with Reds pitcher Andrew Abbott and Brewers starter Jose Quintana combining for six hits and 11 strikeouts. The Reds broke the deadlock in the seventh when Hays led off with a double, later scoring on Jose Trevino‘s sacrifice fly.

As the game progressed, the Brewers took a late lead in the ninth inning thanks to William Contreras, who smashed a two-run homer, pushing Milwaukee ahead 2-1. But the Reds rallied back, tying the game when Will Benson reached base on a fielding error by shortstop Joey Ortiz and later scored on Trevino’s hit.

In the 10th inning, the Reds capitalized on their opportunities. After a crucial sacrifice bunt by Spencer Steer advanced designated runner TJ Friedl to third, intentional walks to Elly De La Cruz and Benson loaded the bases, setting the stage for Hays’ decisive hit.

This loss accounted for just the Brewers’ 14th blown save of the season, ranking them third fewest in MLB, according to ESPN Research. Meanwhile, the Reds achieved a remarkable feat, becoming the only team this season to avoid being swept in any series, marking their 40 series without a sweep—the longest in franchise history.

NEXT UP: The Brewers will look to rebound as they face Freddy Peralta (14-5, 2.90) against the Cubs at Wrigley Field on Monday. The Reds will send Brady Singer (10-9, 4.31) to the mound against the Angels in Anaheim.

This thrilling game has captivated fans and will certainly be remembered as a turning point in the 2023 MLB season. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
