UPDATE: Sierra Canyon’s rising star, defensive lineman Mikhal Johnson, has made headlines after a spectacular performance last season, showcasing his dual-threat capability on the field. Johnson, standing at 6 feet 2 inches and weighing 255 pounds, caught a dramatic touchdown pass in the Mission League championship game last year, marking a pivotal moment in his athletic career.
In a thrilling game against Gardena Serra, Johnson described the experience as “something out of a movie.” After practicing the play during the week, coach Jon Ellinghouse called on Johnson to line up at tight end. “I lined up, did a fake block, and caught the ball over my shoulder,” he recounted, emphasizing his excitement as he scored his first-ever touchdown in a skill position. This achievement highlights Johnson’s versatility and impact on the team.
Despite his defensive prowess—recording 16 tackles for losses last season—Johnson’s baseball skills have also contributed to his football success. He noted that the hand-eye coordination gained from baseball enhances his performance on the gridiron. Johnson’s prowess has caught the eyes of Ivy League football schools, indicating strong interest in his academic and athletic potential.
The defensive line for high school football in Southern California is exceptionally strong this year, with several standout players poised for major impacts. Richard Wesley, a Sierra Canyon teammate and Texas commit, has been a force since freshman year. Meanwhile, Tomuhini Topui from Mater Dei, a USC commit, dominates with his size and skill, weighing in at 315 pounds.
Other notable defensive linemen include Khary Wilder of Gardena Serra, an Ohio State commit, and Andrew Williams of Fremont, who is aiming to prove that talent can shine from the City Section. With a roster filled with young, formidable athletes, the competition is fierce.
Johnson remains focused on the upcoming season, as Sierra Canyon strives to advance beyond the Southern Section Division 1 playoffs, where teams like Mater Dei and St. John Bosco have historically posed challenges. “It’s a fire under our butts to keep going,” Johnson stated, emphasizing the team’s commitment to hard work and determination.
As the 2023 season approaches, all eyes will be on Mikhal Johnson and his fellow defensive linemen, poised to make significant impacts on the field. The excitement surrounding these athletes is palpable, with fans eagerly anticipating their performances.
For now, Johnson is gearing up for a season filled with potential and opportunity. Monday will feature Tristan Phillips, a linebacker from Ventura, as the spotlight continues to shine on high school football talent across the nation.
